The Narrow Escape. (Chapter 27)

Brian and Dawn watched intensely as Duchess, the mini-lop rabbit delivered
the last of her young while their father was on the phone with Mac.
Brian could here the tone of his father's voice as he spoke on the phone and
knew right then something was wrong. Dawn heard also and said, "I don't
like the way Dad's talking on his phone. Something's happened."
"I don't like the sound of it, either, Dawn,"  Brian also said,  "But we've
got to stay with Duchess and watch her. Dad will deal with what's going
on."
Gary kept trying to reach Mac Davenport.
"Hello, Mac? Are you still there?" Gary called anxiously over the phone,
"Mac, is something wrong?"
Gary thought he heard faintly in the momentary silence a young woman's
voice, and then a brief conversation between her and Mac, though he
couldn't pick it up because it sounded as if Mac wasn't talking into the
phone though he sounded as if he held it close.
Gary then jerked his cell phone away from his ear suddenly, looking
a bit startled, then immediately put it back to his ear and said, "Yes,
Mac? What's going on?"

Mac Davenport sat up in his hospital bed and was shocked to hear of
the code blue which was for the same room Richard Wiliams was in.
He barely heard Gary on the other end after he heard the code being
called. Just then he saw Karen Williams standing in the doorway of
his room and smiling jubilantly, her mother Neva behind her.
Oh, no Lord, Mac thought in panic, What do I tell her?
Karen noticed Mac's face looked ashen and that he was holding a phone
receiver in his hand and then asked, "Mac, is something wrong?"
Mac struggled to get the words out and stammered, "A-a-a code blue."
"Code blue?" Karen repeated, then knew what Mac was trying to say
and why.
"Oh, you mean that code blue that was just called?  Karen grinned,
my dad's not in that room I came in to tell you they've moved him and
doing quite well."
Karen and her mother walked in as Mac replied, "Now that is good news."
Mac then held up a finger and said, "Excuse me a minute, stay right there."
Mac put the phone receiver back to his ear and said, "Gary?"  Brief pause.
Mac then went on over the other end.  "Yea, sorry for that brief silence, I
thought there was a code blue for Richard Williams room. The room number
they called was the same one that he was in."
Pause.
"Yes, it was Karen.  She just now told me they moved him and is doing well."
Pause.
"Eight altogether then?"
Pause.
"Okay, now there is a small lamp on the workbench in the garage. They
need to keep them warm."
Pause.
"Have them hang it over the box their in, it doesn't need to be too
close, just let it shine down on them."
Pause.
Good deal. Gary, gotta go. Keep me posted on the rabbits' progress."
Pause.
"Okay, thanks. "Bye now."
Mac hung up the phone and turned his attention to Karen and her mother.
"My one mini-lop rabbit just had her young," Mac stated, "and the Canfield
kids have been caring for them and my other animals."
"I know,"  Neva replied, "They're such sweet children."
"Gary told us all about it when we had breakfast with them last Sunday,"
Karen added,  "That is so sweet."
"They are," Mac said, "That is why I trust them to my pets and my rabbits."
Karen went on.  "Dawn said to us that you were giving them each a rabbit
for helping you care for your dog, cat, and your rabbits. Is this true?"
 "It is."  answered Mac.
"Aww, that is so nice," Karen smiled.
"Vera told us the kids call you Uncle Mac," Neva remarked.
"Oh yea," Mac answered, thinking, What else did they all tell them?

This concludes Chapter 27.
