The Narrow Escape. (Chapter 21)

The Canfields' car turned off Newberry Road and on to Oak
Street to head to Newberry Community Church. While
traveling down the street, the Canfields were discussing the
task of feeding and caring for Mac Davenport's animals while
he was recovering from injuries received while rescuing the
Williams man from a wrecked and burning car.
Inside the Canfields' car Gary announced to his children
Brian and Dawn, "Today after church is the first day
on the job Uncle Mac gave you. When we get up there
familiarize yourselves with where he keeps everything that
way you won't forget, okay?"
"Okay, Dad," Brian replied with Dawn replying likewise.
"Good deal,"
Vera looked over to her husband and asked, "How long is
Mac going to be laid up in the hospital, do you know?"
"I'm not sure," Gary replied, "he has to stay off that foot."
Vera turned to look back at her kids in the back seat and
said to them, "We still need to keep praying for your Uncle
Mac, kids. Pray that he has a quick recovery."
"We sure will, Mom," Brian answered.
"I will, too," Dawn put in.
"Yes, we all will," Gary added, "Let's ask the church to do
likewise, shall we?" Everyone replied with an enthusiastic
"Yes!" Brian then put in, "Shouldn't we also keep praying
for Mr. Williams as well?"
" We most certainly will, Sweetheart," Vera replied to Brian,
"and that was so thoughtful of you to mention that, too."
"Pray for the man's family, too?" Dawn added.
"Absolutely, dear," Gary replied to her then said, "In fact Mr.
Williams' wife and daughter should be at church today so you'll
get to meet them, okay?"
"Okay, Dad," Dawn said.
"Yes, sir," Brian answered also.
The church street sign came into view and Gary wheeled into the
church parking lot and over to the white 15-passenger window
Chevy van that served as the church bus. Gary and Vera headed
the church bus ministry.
As they pulled into the space next to where the bus was Vera
turned around to her kids and said, "Why don't you two go on
inside to see if Jenny or Uncle Wilfred need help with anything
while your dad and I go pick up everybody, alright?"
"Alright, Mom," Brian answered.
As everyone got out of the car Brian waited until Dawn came
around to the other side of the car where he was and they both
walked brisky toward the church main entrance, Brian allowing
Dawn to keep pace with him.
As Vera watched them go, she recalled the time how she had
Brian hold his sister's hand when she was just beginning to walk.
Now that the children were a little older she thought holding hands
was not necessary but still strongly insisted they stay close together
when out and about.
I didn't have to remind him, she thought, seeing how Brian just
waited for his sister as if it was second nature.
Vera went to join her husband in the church bus as Gary started the
engine and she got up front. The bus then pulled out and headed out
to pick up folks.

Wilfred Templar was at the table in the hallway preparing the flyers
when he heard Brian and Dawn come in and make their way toward
him.
Wilfred turned to look tward them and responded with a cordial yet
cheerful, "Well good morning my dear children and welcome."
Dawn was the first to reply.
"Good morning, Uncle Wilfred," Dawn said as she quickly went over
to him with her little arms outstretched to hug him with Wilfred having
to stoop down a bit to do likewise.
"Why thank you, my child," Wilfred responded jovially to Dawn's
effectionate greeting, "So glad to have you here."
Brian walked up to Wilfred and shook his hand with his 'good morning'
greeting then asked, "May we help with the bulletins?"
"Why certainly, dear boy," Wilfred answered, "I'll fold while you and
your sister put in the inserts, pip-pip?"
"Pip-pip," was Brian's response with Dawn responding with the same answer.
"Very good."
While the three of them went about their tasks, Wilfred then announced,
"After this is completed, there are two ladies I would like you to meet who
are also anxious to meet you as well."
"That's cool, Uncle Wilfred," Brian replied. He then thought that the two
ladies Wilfred just mentioned might be the family of the man Mac rescued
the day before.
