on his pets, the Canfields noticed the lights had come back on.
"The power's been restored," Gary remarked when he saw lights
on in the other neighborhood homes.
A cheer of relief filled the car as Gary wheeled the Toyota Camry
into the driveway.
"At least we won't have to go over Mr. Davenport's directions witha flashlight," Brian stated.
"That's for sure," Vera answered then added, "I think it was a good
idea to stop by Mr. Davenport's house on the way home. It helped to
familiarize you as to where Mac keeps the food and bowls."
"Kato seemed glad to see me," Dawn spoke, "He walked right up to
me."
"I say he really does like you, sweetheart," Vera remarked.
"Accept Kato is exclusive to her," Brian said, "Cornelius loves
all of us. He almost tackled me when we went over to him."
" Yes," Gary spoke up, "And Mr. Davenport instructed me to
tell you if he leaps up on you, give him a firm smack on the
nose. He's still a pup despite his size, so Mac tells me."
"Okay, Dad," Brian acknowledged his father.
As they entered the back door Gary's cell phone began to ring.
Gary pulled it out of its case while Vera went to the kitchen
and the children went to the basement playroom to study the
directions Mac wrote down for them on how to care for his pets
and rabbits.
"Hello?" Gary answered. It was Mac Davenport.
As Gary held the cellphone to his ear he listened intensely and
then his eyebrow's went up as he said the word "Oh?" and then,
"Are you serious?"
A pause and then, "When did this happen?"
Another pause as Vera rushed in to where her husband stood
"Gary," Vera said, an intense look on her face, "What is it?
What's wrong?"
She knew then right after she ended with the word wrong that
nothing was wrong at all.
Her husband's expression indicated the exact opposite.
Gary spoke on the cell joyously, saying, "Mac, that is absolutely
great news! Hold on, Vera's standing right here, I'll tell her!"
He covered the cellphone with his other hand and announced
joyously to his wife, "Mac just told me that the Williams guy gave
his life to the Lord. He got saved!"
Vera responded with an "AHHH!" in rejoicing and both hands went
to the side of her face.
Gary then got back on the cell to Mac, and then continued, "Okay,
Mac? I'm going to call Pastor Shumway and then Wilfred and Jenny."
Another pause and, "You're very welcome."
Pause and then, "I certainly will."
He then went on with, "Just in case I heard you wrong, you said the
Williams guy's family actually requested you be brought to his room?"
Pause.
" How did they swing that?"
Pause.
"I can easily believe that."
Pause.
"She wheeled you over to his bedside?"
Pause.
"Aha, I see. You're her hero, brother!"
Pause.
"Hahaha! I couldn't resist that one, big guy!"
Pause.
"That's outstanding. We'll be looking for them."
One more pause and, "Hey, you're very welcome there, buddy and
I'll see you next week, 'bye and God bless."
Brian and Dawn were down in the basement when they heard their mother
cry out excitedly.
They both looked at each other in surprise then ran up the basement stairs
to see what the commotion was about.
"Mom!" Dawn exclaimed, "Whats'wrong?" She looked almost frightened.
"Nothing, sweetheart," her mother answered, putting a hand the shoulders
of both her children and then went on, "Your dad was just on the phone with
your Uncle Mac, he called us to say the man he rescued accepted Jesus as
his Savior. Isn't that wonderful?"
"It sure is, Mom," Brian replied enthusiastically.
"Our prayers worked," Dawn rejoiced, clapping.
"Yes they did," Gary came in to where Vera and the children were and added,
"This is definitely a time of rejoicing and thanksgiving."
"The man didn't die after he was saved, did he?" asked Dawn.
"No-no, honey," her dad answered, "He is still very much alive."
"That's good." Dawn said, relieved.
Vera put an arm around both her children to hug them with Gary doing the
same after she stood up.
Gary then said to Vera, "I 'm going to be out in the garage to finish up the
pinecar track, could you go over the directions with Brian and Dawn?"
" I sure will, dear," Vera replied and then turned to her children with, "You
two head down to the playroom and I'll be with you shortly, okay?"
"Okay, Mom," Brian acknowledged.
"Yes, Mom," Dawn answered and both went down to the basement playroom.
Dusk was falling over the neighborhood and the rest of Newberry as Gary
and Vera talked a little more about the day's events then Gary headed out to
garage to complete the pinecar track and Vera went down to the basement to
go over the directions Mac had given their children on taking care of his pets.
This concludes Chapter 19.
