The Narrow Escape. (Chapter 13)

Karen and her mother were just outside the door of the room
where Richard Williams was lying in.
The RN attending him, Cindy Hunt, came out and told Karen
and Neva they had five minutes to see him as visiting hours
would be up for one hour.
"Thank you," Neva answered as she and Karen walked past
the RN and into the room. Cindy watched them go in with a
smile of compassion and concern.
Richard Williams was still in serious conditon but stable as
he lie on his bed hooked up to oxygen and monitors. He was
also conscious, a good sign.
Karen was the first to reach his bedside.
"Daddy?" Karen spoke softly, "Its me, Karen. How are you
feeling?"
Her father slowly turned his head toward where his daughter
stood and a smile slowly formed which Karen could see even
through the oxygen mask that was over his face.
"Hey, Pumpkin" was the response. Karen felt a tear roll down
her right cheek as she felt renewed emotion at her father's response
with the pet name.
Neva walked up beside her and put a hand on her shoulder.
"Richard," Neva said, "We're praying for you. And I believe so far
the Lord has heard us."
"Thanks," Richard answered groggily, "Wake up call, m-mayybe?"
"Daddy," Karen addressed, "Please don't talk any more than you
have to. You must relax."
"Yes, dear," Neva put in, "you need to relax as much as possible."
"Understood," Richard acknowledged. Karen looked down at her
father as she thought about the name Pumpkin which her father
had just called her. Karen turned to look at her mother and said,
"He called me 'Pumpkin.' He hasn't called me that since I was
ten-years-old." She sniffed and wiped her eye with a tissue.
Her eyes then suddenly lit up then she said, "Mom? He said
something about a wake-up call. I remember you said this could
be a wake-up call for him?"
"Yes I did," Neva answered with the same expression as Karen had
with her realization. At that RN Cindy Hunt came through the door
to announce their five minutes were up.
At that Neva went over to Richard's bedside and said to him, "Honey,
we have to go now. We'll be back in an hour, I love you."
Karen likewise went over and gently held her father's hand and said softly,
"I love you, Dad."
"I love you too, Pumpkin," Richard croaked.
Karen slowly released her father's hand and turned to leave the room,
looking back as she headed to the door. Neva gently reached out and
took her by the arm and held Karen close as they both exited the room.
Richard tilted his head to watch his wife and daughter leave then looked
up toward the ceiling after the door closed after them.
He must have stared up toward the ceiling for a good thirty seconds then
he uttered the word, "God."

This concludes Chapter 13.
